Teaching- Intellect, Wisdom, Logic

Element- Wind

The North is a very popular direction in modern society. Humans live in a world driven by information and technology. This fuels the intellect and sharpens logic. Bits of binary code are strung together to create the illusion of  reality. The danger in this distraction is to view these things as the whole of Life, and to make them the sole mirror of Creator. The North teaches us of balance in the Medicine Wheel with our intellect, logic. This balance reflects our wisdom.

Wisdom can only be grown from the soil of experience. There is an old story about the student and the master.

"Master, how did you get so wise?" asked the student.

"Good decisions", was the reply.

"Master, how did you learn to make such good decisions?" inquired the student.

"Bad decisions", said the Master.

The North asks us to use our intellect like the wind, to blow away the haze and doubt of confusion so we may see what action to take. Merely having a clear view of a problem means little if no action is taken towards its resolution. Logic can be a powerful tool in this action. These teachings of the North help us to use the gift of our mind to live a life of right action.

The North is balanced by the emotions in the South. In this way we begin to see how the Medicine Wheel teaches balance. When we are distraught emotionally, we need only let our minds clearly see the facts behind the feelings to gain insight into the healing path of balance. Conversely, when we are plagued by a busy, fact filled mind and begin to feel "Flat or numb" it is time to step from the isolation of the North of our Circle of Being back towards our feelings and the center of our circle.
